Advising Holds

To help ensure that all undergraduate CCAS students are on track with requirements and selecting the best courses to meet academic goals, you will be required to meet with your POD advisors at some key points along your academic career. This also helps you establish a good partnership with your POD advisors.

If you do not meet with an advisor in your POD during these times, an advising hold will prevent you from being able to register for your classes. This advising hold is not meant to be punitive, but is merely to ensure that you build a good working relationship with your POD advisors and make timely progress toward your degree.

Types of Holds

During your first term at GW an advising hold will be placed on your student account. In order for first-term transfer students to register for your second semester classes you will be required to meet with one of your POD advisors to review your DegreeMAP planner for your second semester classes. First-semester first years will be required to attend a group advising session with their POD advisors to have their hold removed.

If you have accumulated more than 45 earned (not including courses in progress) credit hours but have not yet declared a major, an advising hold will be placed on your student account. In order to register for your next semester classes you will be required to declare your major. Be sure to plan ahead and declare your major well in advance of registration!

If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 an advising hold will be placed on your student account. In order to register for your next semester classes you will be required to meet with your assigned associate director several times throughout the semester.

Please be aware that other offices at GW may place a hold on your student account that will prevent you from registering from classes. Some of the most common holds that students encounter are from the offices of Student Accounts and Medical Services. However, there may be others. You can always check your hold status on GWeb by clicking Student Records & Registration/Student Records Information/View Administrative Holds.
